The READY, COLOUR, ENHANCE system that we have is so easy, it’s like taking candy from a baby! Below are FAQ’s answering common Velvet Finishes questions...
Is Velvet Finishes a chalk or milk paint?
No, neither. VF is a specially formulated, low VOC and non-toxic, latex, water based paint.
Is painting with Velvet Finishes easy?
YES!! The Velvet Finishes COLOUR paint is very easy to use. No special equipment or skill set is needed!
How do I use COLOUR?
First, shake well - even though our specially formulated paint does not always appear to separate, shake the product well prior to use. Stir if necessary.
The beauty of COLOUR is the randomness in which you can paint. Brush strokes disappear so the direction of your application becomes less important. Slap. It. On.
Always allow COLOUR to dry thoroughly in-between each coat. Drying times will depend on air humidity. We recommend to never apply more than three coats in a 24 hour period. To speed up your drying time, use a fan!
The PROTECT may be applied a couple of hours after the last coat of COLOUR is applied.
Kellie's Tips: It's best not to apply COLOUR too sparingly. COLOUR has a self-leveling component and applying thinly does not allow that to work.
Kellie's Tips: Once you have applied a coat of COLOUR, simply let it dry. Do not overwork the paint. Because COLOUR dries very quickly, the tack time is super quick. If you drag your brush back through after the tacking has begun, those brush strokes will show.
What is the cure time of Velvet Finishes?
Even though Velvet Finishes dries quickly, don't forget that the paint needs to cure before using. We recommend several days cure time.
Does the Velvet Finishes line have an odor?
No, VF does not smell! Our specially formulated, low VOC product does not emit harmful chemicals or a nasty smell.
Kellie's Tip: Because COLOUR does not have an odor, like some products on the market, you can literally paint a piece in your house. Want to repaint the chest in your bedroom? You can paint it where it sits! No need to drag it outside, wait for the weather to clear, or any of that. You can literally paint it in your bedroom.
My paint is thick, what do I do?
Due to the deep saturation of the COLOUR product, you may find some of the paints are thick. This can especially happen with the darker greens or blues. If this is so, thin by gradually adding water until you reach your desired thickness. There is no specific ratio, simply thin the paint until you are happy with the thickness.
How many coats will I have to paint?
We strive for a two coat finish. However, sometimes, it may take more coats than that. Dramatic color changes (going from very dark to very light or light pieces going dark) make take up to 4 coats.
Colour Minimalistic requires more coats.
Minimalistic was originally created as a way to lighten up the intensity of our Colours. It is a pure white tint and is thin, therefore requiring additional coats if used as paint.
Kellie's Tip: If you are painting a set of furniture or kitchen cabinets, it is helpful to base paint with Understated.
How much paint do I need for my project?
A quart of Velvet Finishes covers roughly 120 square feet of surface.
The formula for determining your paint quantity needs is simple. Once you know the total square footage of surface space you will be painting, you can determine how much paint is needed by using our simple formula.
